Twum ecstatic as Mjøndalen escape relegation:
Midfielder Isaac Twum is overjoyed after his side Mjøndalen IF earned another opportunity to play topflight football in the 2021 season.
The ‘Browns’ side ended the 2020 Norwegian Eliteserien at 14th of the 16-team league log.
Mjøndalen needed to fight for their topflight status in a relegation playoff and succeeded with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Sogndal at Valerenga’s Intility Arena on Monday.
It took an injury-time goal from defender Markus Nakkim to decide the drama-filled encounter.
Mjøndalen scored first through Ole Amund Sveen in the 9th minute but Sogndal overturned it with quickfire goals from Nigeria’s Akor Jerome Adams (penalty) and Tomas Kristoffersen to lead 2-1 in the 79th and 80th minutes respectively.
Sveen, however, pegged back with his brace for Mjøndalen in the 88th minute before Nakkim scored the match-winner 7 minutes into added time.
Twum missed the crucial relegation decider due to a knee injury.
Reacting to his side’s success, the former Inter Allies captain said:
“The way I’m very happy, words alone can’t express my excitement.”
“If you look at how we managed to retain our Eliteserien status, all I can say is thank you, Lord.”
“Still short of words, I’m very happy and look forward to the new season where I hope we can do much better.”
Isaac Twum joined Mjøndalen from now relegated IK Start last September.
